Hard Water Recap 2010 - 2011

The Manitoba ice fishing season is over It’s time to put away the ice gear and get ready for open water, but before we do lets take a brief look at the year gone by. This year’s high water and strong currents coming out of the Red made for a very different winter on the lake. Early ice was good but it quickly became clear the fish were not here in the same numbers as past years and also not in the same locations. The key to success was getting out and fishing relatively unknown waters and it paid off BIG time. Although the really big fish seemed to be in some of the same key locations the numbers were not and the key was finding clear water. It was also a year of heavy snowfall and if you did not have a sled or quad you were stuck fishing unproductive water. As always March brought warm weather better driving conditions and better fishing. The fishing was not nearly as hot as the last couple of years but we had another season to remember full of happy guests, good friends and good fishing. The highlight of my year was catching a monstrosity. A 32-inch hog of a greenback walleye estimated at around 15 lbs. It was truly a fish of a lifetime and it was released healthy to be caught again. We are already getting bookings for next March as it offers some of the best ice fishing of the year and gets booked up quick. If you’re interested in booking a trip it is never too early to make a reservation. Bring on the Cats!
